2 Timothy 4:9-22

Purpose: to stand firm on the foundation laid in the grace of Christ.

Standing Firm on God’s Word

2 Timothy 4:1-8

Purpose: In the face of false teachings, the man of God always stands firm on God’s Word

1. What to do? Preach the Word! (2 Timothy 4:1-2a)

          A solemn charge

2. When to Preach the Word? (2 Timothy 4:2b)

In season and out of season

3. How to Preach the Word? (2 Timothy 4:2c)

Reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience & instruction

4. Why Preach the Word? (2 Timothy 4:3-4)

          To keep God’s people in God’s Truth

          Fulfills his ministry, sober, endures hardship, does the work of an evangelist

2 Timothy 3:10-17

Purpose: stand firm under the persecution, remembering the truth of the Word of God and its’ perfecting work.

Standing Firm Against Apostacy

a.k.a. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

2 Timothy 3:1-9

Purpose: The man of God able to fight apostasy, knowing the times, avoiding false teachers

1. The Man of God Knows the Times (v. 1)

2. The Man of God Avoids False Teachers (vv. 2-9)

          Character of False Teachers: Nineteen Negatives (vv. 2-5a)

          Avoid them! (v. 5b)

          Conduct of False Teachers (vv. 6-7)

          Classic False Teachers: Jannes & Jambres (vv. 8-9)

                     Their end will be obvious to all, no progress, folly

          Contrast with True Teachers: Moses and the Truth (v. 8)

God’s Man, A Useful Servant
2 Timothy 2:20-26

Purpose: The man of God must be rightly motivated to stand strong for the true gospel and the possible repentance of those in opposition to the true gospel.

God’s Man, God’s Way

2 Timothy 2:14-19

Purpose: How God’s man stands firm, living and working God’s way

1. God’s Man: Wise with Words (2 Tim 2:14, 16-18)

          Remind (v. 14)
          Avoid (vv. 16-18)

2. God’s Man: Upholding God’s Word (2 Tim 2:15)

3. God’s Man: Against Wickedness (2 Tim 2:19)

God’s Firm Foundation Stands, having this seal:

• The Lord knows His own
• everyone who names His name must abstain from wickedness

God Is Faithful
2 Timothy 2:11-13

Purpose: To proclaim the faithfulness of God and the results of faithfulness and faithlessness to Him.

The True Man of God

Purpose: Suffering for the glory of God and the salvation of others

2. The Man of God - Dedicated, Determined, Diligent (2 Tim 2:3-7)

As a Soldier (vv. 3-4)

As a Farmer (v. 6)

          Has the Lord given you understanding?

3. The Man of God, Un-Daunted (2 Tim 2:8-10)

          Remember Jesus Christ – He is our supreme example (see also Heb 12:1-4)

          Un-Daunted by any suffering! STAND FIRM! (See also Eph 6:10-14)

          Why? For the salvation of the chosen in Christ Jesus and eternal glory!

Hold Fast and Suffer Well
2 Timothy 1:13-18

1. Hold to the Gospel (2 Timothy 1:13)

Unashamed of the Gospel!

2 Timothy 1:6-12

Purpose: to rekindle an unashamed spirit, fueled by the gospel of Jesus Christ

1. Rekindling an Unashamed Gospel Spirit (2 Tim 1:6-8)

          - God grants us a spirit of power, love, and discipline   
              to live unashamed for Christ (v. 7)

          - Timothy, do not be ashamed of the testimony of
              Jesus Christ or Paul (v. 8)

          - Paul, not ashamed of suffering for Jesus Christ (v. 12)

          - Onesiphorus, often refreshed Paul, unashamed of
              Paul’s chains (v. 16)

          - Keep proclaiming the gospel, and supporting those
              who do, regardless of the cost

2. Fueled by Gospel Power (2 Tim 1:9-10)

          God’s eternal plan now revealed in Christ who died

             and rose again to save sinners
